Mercedes Contemplates Scaling Back U.S. Entry-Level Cars Due to New Tariffs

Mercedes-Benz is weighing the option of pulling some of its least expensive cars from the U.S. market due to the impact of new auto tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump. The automaker is considering cutting sales of models like the GLA, a smaller sport utility vehicle, which might no longer be profitable under the 25% tariffs set to take effect this week. Sources close to the matter revealed that the decision is still under review, and the company is waiting for more clarity on how the tariffs will be implemented.

The uncertainty surrounding the tariffs has frustrated Mercedes executives, who struggle to plan without clear guidance from Washington. The proposed tariffs are part of a broader trade conflict that has disrupted the global automotive industry, with manufacturers facing rising costs and potential losses. If the tariffs go ahead, the GLA, which starts at around $43,000, could become unprofitable for Mercedes if the company cannot pass the cost onto customers. As a result, Mercedes is considering shifting its focus toward more profitable, higher-end models to minimize the financial strain.

Mercedes shares have taken a hit, declining as much as 1.1% recently, with the broader automotive sector also facing uncertainties.  Other automakers like Ferrari and Aston Martin are looking to raise prices in the U.S., while Volkswagen may expand its local manufacturing operations to avoid the tariffs. Mercedes has been focusing more on its high-end vehicles, such as the S-Class sedan, under the leadership of CEO Ola Källenius. The company’s strategy has been to reduce its reliance on compact models and increase investments in more expensive, higher-margin cars. However, the new tariff threat has added a layer of complexity to this strategy, making the future of some of its entry-level cars in the U.S. market uncertain.
